LAGOS PULLS DOWN 17 HOUSES IN LEKKI TO CLEAR WATERWAY, FIGHT FLOODING.

The Lagos State Government has demolished 17 buildings at Oral Estate II, Lekki, in a major operation aimed at restoring the Right of Way (RoW) along the Ikota River alignment and curbing persistent flooding in the area.

According to officials of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the affected structures were built on waterways and drainage channels, obstructing natural water flow and worsening flooding in nearby communities.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who supervised the exercise, stated that the demolition was part of the state’s wider flood control strategy and enforcement of environmental laws. He emphasized that repeated warnings had been issued to property owners before the final removal.

“The government will not fold its arms while people build on drainage setbacks and flood plains. These encroachments endanger lives and properties across the state,” Wahab said.

Residents of the affected area expressed mixed reactions, with some lamenting the loss of their homes, while others welcomed the move as necessary to prevent future disasters.

The demolition is the latest in a series of enforcement actions across Lagos as authorities intensify efforts to restore blocked drainage channels and reclaim encroached lands before the peak of the rainy season.
