As Nigeria joins the world to celebrate World Tourism Day 2025, with the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, tourism expert Mr. Dare Olayiwola has called for bold action to reposition the sector as a driver of inclusive growth and foreign exchange.
Speaking in an interview with AGIL STAR TV, Olayiwola stressed that sustainable transformation requires more than promotion. “We must mainstream sustainability into destination planning, invest in community-led conservation, and incentivize green innovation in hospitality and transport. This will make Nigerian destinations globally competitive and resilient,” he said.
He identified technology and innovation as critical accelerators, citing smart hotel systems, drones for park management, and AI-driven demand forecasting as tools already improving efficiency. He also emphasized digital platforms such as mobile payments and online craft marketplaces, which empower local communities.
On Nigeria’s attractions, Olayiwola highlighted Yankari Game Reserve, the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, and Ado-Awaye’s suspended lake, noting that proper packaging and storytelling could transform these sites into global icons.
He also pointed to emerging global trends in wellness tourism, eco-adventures, domestic leisure travel, and “bleisure” (business-leisure packages) as opportunities Nigeria must seize.
However, he acknowledged persistent barriers in infrastructure and security, calling for public-private partnerships to upgrade roads, airports, and accommodation, alongside professional tourist safety units.
Olayiwola urged the government to treat tourism as an export industry, with a dedicated growth plan, tax incentives, simplified visas, and international marketing campaigns.
