United Airlines has updated its Contract of Carriage to formally require passengers to use headphones when playing audio or video content during flights, introducing stricter enforcement measures that could lead to removal from aircraft for non-compliance.

Nijatravel reports that the revised policy is now included in the airline’s “Refusal of Transport” section, meaning travellers  who fail to use headphones while streaming movies, music, or other media may be denied boarding or removed mid-flight. The airline’s decision aligns with broader efforts across the aviation sector to address disruptive onboard behaviour. Under the new rule, refusal to comply with crew instructions regarding headphone use may also result in temporary or permanent travel restrictions with the airline. United Airlines clarified that the measure is intended to maintain cabin comfort and minimise disturbances caused by passengers playing content aloud without personal audio devices.

With the expansion of onboard Wi-Fi and increased reliance on personal electronic devices, airlines have experienced a rise in complaints related to noise disruptions. While many carriers encourage headphone usage as a courtesy, United’s approach makes the requirement contractually enforceable.

To ease compliance, the airline stated that complimentary basic earbuds may be available upon request from flight attendants, though availability is not guaranteed. Passengers are strongly advised to carry their own headphones when travelling.

Aviation analysts note that embedding behavioural expectations into legally binding travel contracts strengthens crew authority and reduces ambiguity in enforcement. The policy update also reflects ongoing industry-wide adjustments aimed at improving passenger experience amid increased post-pandemic travel demand.

Travellers are encouraged to review airline contracts before departure to avoid unexpected issues at the gate or during flight. As cabin etiquette policies continue evolving, staying informed helps ensure smoother journeys.
