President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the constitution of the board of the Nigerian Anti-Doping Agency, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s sports governance reforms. The approval is aimed at strengthening compliance with international anti-doping standards.
Nijatravel reports that the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, disclosed the development after briefing the President at the State House in Abuja. He described the decision as a significant step following nearly two decades of delay surrounding the Anti-Doping Bill.
The Anti-Doping Bill, which had been pending for almost 20 years, was signed into law last year. The latest approval now enables the formal constitution of the agency’s board, fulfilling critical requirements set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Dikko noted that the move reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining integrity in sports. He emphasised that meeting WADA standards is essential for Nigerian athletes to compete globally without sanctions or restrictions.
During the briefing, the NSC also submitted its 2025 annual report to the President. The commission outlined key achievements and presented a roadmap for executing approved reforms and development plans for 2026.
The NSC Chairman further addressed Nigeria’s appeal over alleged rule breaches by the Democratic Republic of Congo during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification playoffs. While the case remains before FIFA’s disciplinary bodies, he said the focus has shifted to strengthening future preparations.
Officials explained that Nigeria had filed a complaint after losing the playoff match on penalties in November 2025, citing concerns over player eligibility. The matter is currently under review by relevant football authorities.
Dikko highlighted that sports reforms form part of the broader “Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria Sports Economy,” designed to position sports as an economic driver contributing to GDP growth and job creation.
