Spirit Airlines has filed a motion seeking court approval to reject leases on 87 Airbus A320-family jets as part of its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The move marks another major step in the low-cost carrier’s restructuring efforts as it battles financial challenges for the second time in less than a year.

In addition to the lease rejections, Spirit is also coordinating the return of 27 Airbus A320neo aircraft to lessor AerCap. Together, these actions will impact 114 planes more than half of the airline’s current 214-aircraft fleet.

The decision is aimed at reducing costs and streamlining operations, as the Florida-based carrier continues to face pressure from rising fuel prices, intense competition, and sluggish demand in some key markets.

Industry observers say Spirit’s downsizing could lead to reduced flight frequencies on several routes, particularly in its domestic network, as the airline seeks to stabilize operations.

Despite the drastic measures, Spirit Airlines has maintained that it remains committed to resuming normal operations once its restructuring plan is approved and implemented.
