South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, has been found dead outside a hotel in Paris. He was 58.

According to French media reports, his wife contacted authorities after receiving a worrying message from him earlier in the evening. Police later discovered his body outside the Hyatt Hotel following a search.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and investigations are underway. French police have not released further details at this stage.

South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed that it is aware of the reports and said an official statement will be issued once more information becomes available.

Mthethwa, a former cabinet minister, was appointed South Africa’s ambassador to France in February 2024. His sudden passing marks a significant loss for the country’s diplomatic community.

The South African embassy in Paris is expected to provide consular support to his family while authorities in both countries work closely to establish the cause of death.
