The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the withdrawal of special registration concessions previously granted to candidates with albinism, citing widespread misuse and rising cases of malpractice linked to artificial intelligence.
In a statement, JAMB Registrar Prof. Isaq Oloyede confirmed that the decision follows complaints from more than 7,000 candidates during the last examination cycle. According to the board, some registered beneficiaries of the concession were allegedly involved in irregularities, including exploitation of the accommodations and use of AI tools to gain unfair advantage.
Prof. Oloyede stressed that while the board remains committed to supporting candidates with genuine needs, it must also uphold the integrity of the examination process. “These concessions were introduced to ensure equity,” he said, “but their abuse undermined fairness and credibility of the exercise.”
The revoked concessions included extended registration timelines and adapted test arrangements designed to assist individuals with visual and related challenges. JAMB noted these supports will now be reviewed and replaced with more secure, need-based accommodations in future exams.
The board has called on stakeholders, advocacy groups, and affected candidates to collaborate on developing new frameworks that balance accessibility with examination integrity.
JAMB also reiterated its broader crackdown on exam malpractice, including deployment of technology to detect and prevent unauthorized AI usage during tests.
