Rivers United manager Finidi George says individual mistakes proved costly after his side suffered a 3–0 defeat to Pyramids FC in their CAF Champions League clash in Cairo. The Nigerian side struggled to contain the Egyptians, who took full advantage in a ruthless second-half display.
After a tight opening period, Pyramids FC broke the deadlock shortly after the restart and never looked back. Rivers United, who had shown discipline in the first half, crumbled under pressure as the hosts went on to score a late hat-trick that sealed the result.
Speaking after the match, Finidi admitted that his players’ errors directly contributed to the heavy loss, noting that such lapses cannot be afforded at this stage of continental competition. He expressed disappointment that the team failed to maintain their structure once they fell behind.
Despite the setback, the coach insisted that the tie is not over and urged his squad to respond strongly in the return leg. He emphasised the importance of keeping focus, improving concentration, and cutting out mistakes if Rivers United hope to stay alive in the competition.
Rivers United will now return to Nigeria to prepare for the decisive fixture, needing a near-perfect performance to overturn the deficit and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
