FG Approves Nationwide Upgrade of Airport Navigation and Communication Systems.

The Federal Government has approved a major upgrade of navigational and communication systems across airports in the country, a move aimed at boosting air safety and modernising aviation infrastructure. Authorities say the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to align Nigeria’s airspace operations with global standards.

According to officials, the project will involve the installation of advanced landing aids, communication equipment, and surveillance tools designed to enhance aircraft guidance, especially during poor weather conditions. The upgrade is expected to significantly reduce delays, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen overall safety management.

The government notes that the overhaul will be implemented in phases, beginning with high-traffic airports where ageing systems have increasingly struggled to meet current demand. Stakeholders in the aviation sector have long called for such improvements, citing frequent disruptions linked to outdated equipment.

Aviation experts say modern navigation and communication systems are critical to supporting the growth of domestic and international air travel. They add that improved infrastructure will encourage airline expansion, attract new carriers, and ensure smoother travel experiences for passengers.

With approval now granted, the Ministry of Aviation and its agencies are expected to fast-track procurement and installation processes. The government maintains that the investment underscores its commitment to a safer, more reliable, and globally competitive aviation sector.
