FG Appeals for Calm as NUPENG, IPMAN Halt Operations Over Dangote Refinery Dispute.

The Federal Government has appealed for calm as the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) suspend operations following an unresolved dispute with Dangote Refinery. The strike, which begins today, raises fears of widespread fuel scarcity across the country.

NUPENG accused Dangote Refinery of engaging in “anti-labour practices inimical to the survival and livelihoods” of its Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch. The union expressed concerns that the refinery’s aggressive expansion into petrol distribution could edge out private depot owners, modular refineries, marketers, retailers, truck owners, and drivers, leading to massive job losses.

IPMAN has also ordered its members to shut down operations, citing attempts to monopolize the downstream sector and warning of potential threats to their businesses. Both associations have called on the Federal Government to uphold the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act and prevent what they describe as a looming crisis in the sector.

The dispute centers on Dangote Refinery’s decision to enter the petrol distribution chain — a move the unions believe undermines existing stakeholders and endangers thousands of jobs. They argue that without government intervention, the industry could face widespread economic disruptions.

The strike could have serious consequences for the economy, including fuel shortages that may cripple transport, commerce, and daily activities nationwide. Thousands of truck drivers and support workers are also at risk of losing their livelihoods, while billions in private investments could be jeopardized.

In response, the Federal Government has urged all stakeholders to remain calm and prioritize dialogue. Officials say talks are underway to resolve the dispute and restore the naira-for-crude arrangement, which could help stabilize fuel supply and prices.
