FAAN Plans 257% Cargo Tariff Hike, Sparking Aviation Industry Unrest; Keyamo Attends Global Aviation Conference.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to implement a 257 per cent increase in cargo tariffs, a decision that has triggered growing unrest within the aviation and logistics industry.

Under the proposed tariff review, charges on several cargo-related services are set to rise sharply, ending nearly two decades of unchanged rates. FAAN says the adjustment is necessary to reflect current economic realities, address rising operational costs, and improve revenue generation across the nation’s airports.

However, the move has been met with strong resistance from freight forwarders, cargo handlers, and other aviation stakeholders, who argue that the hike is excessive and could negatively affect cargo traffic, raise the cost of goods, and weaken Nigeria’s competitiveness as a regional cargo hub. Industry groups have warned that the increase may force operators to scale down activities or divert business to neighbouring countries if not reconsidered.

As tensions mount at home, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, is representing Nigeria at a major global aviation conference, where discussions are focused on airline financing, fleet modernisation, and strengthening international partnerships. The conference brings together key players in global aviation, including aircraft lessors, financiers, and policymakers.

Keyamo’s participation underscores the government’s push to attract foreign investment and position Nigeria as a viable destination for aviation growth, even as domestic stakeholders continue to call for dialogue and moderation over the proposed cargo tariff hike.
