The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing fresh political turbulence amid strong indications that two of its sitting governors, Bayelsa’s Douye Diri and Enugu’s Peter Mbah, are set to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) this month.
According to insider sources, Governor Peter Mbah is expected to officially declare for the APC today, while Governor Douye Diri is reportedly scheduled to make his move on October 14. If confirmed, these defections would represent a significant realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in the South-South and Southeast regions.
Speculations about Diri’s possible defection are not new. In June 2025, Senate President Godswill Akpabio hinted that both Diri and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara “may be next to dump the PDP for the APC.”
Meanwhile, tension has been mounting within the Enugu State chapter of the PDP. Governor Mbah’s repeated absence from PDP governors’ meetings has intensified rumors about his loyalty to the party. Sources within the APC suggest that the party’s national working committee is already making structural adjustments in preparation for his anticipated defection.
