President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has declared Monday a paid public holiday across the country in celebration of the nation’s victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The announcement followed Senegal’s historic triumph at the continental tournament, which saw the Teranga Lions emerge champions after an impressive and hard-fought campaign. The decision is aimed at allowing citizens nationwide to celebrate the achievement and honour the national team for their outstanding performance.
In a statement released after the final, President Faye praised the players, coaching crew and officials for their discipline, resilience and determination throughout the competition. He described the victory as a moment of national pride that has united Senegalese people at home and abroad.
The president noted that the AFCON win reflects the fighting spirit of the Senegalese people and the country’s growing strength in African football. He added that the paid holiday would give workers and families the opportunity to fully participate in nationwide celebrations.
