
Nigeria’s senior women’s cricket team, the Female Yellow Greens, have landed in Rwanda on Sunday for this year’s Kwibuka cricket tournament which will be played from June 3 to 14 in Kigali, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Female Yellow Greens will be making their sixth appearance at the tournament which is part of events to mark the remembrance of the genocide against the Tutsi – an ethnic group in Rwanda, which happened in 1994.
Nigeria will compete against eight other countries including hosts Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and Brazil, among others.
The Nigeria Cricket Federation on Saturday released a list of 14 players for the 11th edition of the tournament.
Edo State’s National Sports Festival sweeping captain, Favour Eseigbe will lead the team which also sees the return of Rukayat Abdulrasaq.
Junior Female Yellow Greens duo, Amusa Kehinde and Omosigho Eguakun, were also handed their debut call-ups after their impressive displays at the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia earlier this year.
Nigeria will face reigning champions Uganda in their opening game on Tuesday before filing out against Brazil on Wednesday.
The nine teams in the tournament will face off in a round-robin format and the top four teams at the end of the group stage will advance to the semi-finals.
The Kwibuka T20 Tournament has been running since 2014. The most successful nation in the tournament is Kenya which boasts of four titles while host nation Rwanda have won it once.
The 2024 edition was won by Uganda with Zimbabwe finishing as runners-up.
