Google has expanded its artificial intelligence-powered search capabilities in Nigeria by introducing support for Yoruba and Hausa languages, a move aimed at improving accessibility and digital inclusion for millions of internet users across the country.

Nijatravel reports that the new feature under the Google Yoruba Hausa AI search Nigeria initiative allows users to ask questions and receive AI-generated summaries in either Yoruba or Hausa through Google’s AI-powered search experience. The update is part of Google’s broader efforts to localize artificial intelligence tools and make digital information easier to access for non-English speakers.

With the rollout, Nigerians can now interact with Google’s AI search by typing or speaking queries in their preferred local language. The AI system then provides relevant responses, summaries, and explanations within the search interface, making it easier for users to obtain information without switching to English.

Google officials say the update reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening language representation and technology inclusion in Africa. Nigeria, one of the continent’s largest digital markets, has more than 500 spoken languages, though English remains the official language used in education and governance. Yoruba and Hausa, however, are among the most widely spoken languages in the country.

According to Google’s regional communications team, the new support is powered by the company’s advanced AI models, which have been trained to better understand local linguistic patterns and deliver more accurate search results in African languages.

Technology analysts say the introduction of Yoruba and Hausa into AI search could significantly improve digital literacy and internet accessibility, especially for users who are more comfortable interacting online in their native languages. The feature also helps reduce barriers that often prevent local communities from fully benefiting from digital tools.

The development forms part of Google’s broader investment in artificial intelligence innovation across Africa, including research partnerships, language datasets, and voice recognition technology designed specifically for the continent’s diverse linguistic environment.

Experts believe the initiative could accelerate the adoption of AI tools in Nigeria by making online knowledge and services more relatable and easier to navigate for millions of users who prefer local language communication.
