Several Mexico football games cancelled over the weekend after violent unrest broke out in parts of the country, forcing authorities and football organisers to suspend major fixtures over security concerns.
Nijatravel reports that the affected matches include fixtures in Mexico’s top-flight league, Liga MX, particularly games scheduled for the seventh round of the Clausura tournament. Organisers confirmed that multiple matches were postponed as tensions escalated in regions impacted by the violence.
The unrest followed reports that Mexican security forces killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. His death reportedly sparked retaliatory attacks, including roadblocks, vehicle burnings, and disruptions to public infrastructure in several states.

In addition to Liga MX fixtures, women’s league matches were also suspended. An international friendly involving the Mexico national football team was equally affected as authorities prioritised public safety and crowd control.
