President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate seeking confirmation of Jamila Abubakar as National Commissioner representing Adamawa State at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The request was formally read during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Nijatravels reports that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, referred the request to the Senate Committee on INEC for detailed consideration. The committee has been asked to report back to the plenary within one week.
President Tinubu emphasized that the nomination complies with constitutional provisions and urged lawmakers to expedite the confirmation process. The approval would fill a key position in the electoral commission ahead of upcoming electoral activities.

In a separate letter, Tinubu also requested Senate confirmation of Ismail Yusuf as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). The nomination aligns with provisions of the NAHCON Act, 2026.
The Senate President referred the second request to the Committee on Rules and Business, also with instructions to report within a week. This step ensures legislative oversight before the appointments are finalized.
The letters highlight the President’s commitment to filling critical federal appointments and strengthening institutions ahead of key national functions. Lawmakers are expected to review the nominations carefully before plenary deliberations.
Political analysts note that confirming Abubakar and Yusuf would enhance the operational effectiveness of INEC and NAHCON. Both institutions play strategic roles in election management and religious pilgrimage oversight, respectively.
Observers also suggest that timely confirmation signals the administration’s intent to maintain continuity in governance and institutional efficiency, particularly in areas affecting national security, elections, and public services.
The Senate is expected to commence committee hearings on both nominations in the coming days. The outcome will determine whether the nominees are formally confirmed for their respective leadership roles.
These nominations represent part of ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to strengthen federal agencies, ensuring competent leadership and adherence to statutory mandates.
