Oyo State Expands CNG Mass Transit with 20-Year PPP Deal.

Oyo State is set to deepen its transition to compressed natural gas (CNG) powered mass transit following the signing of a 20-year public-private partnership (PPP) agreement between the state government and Atlas Core Energy.

Under the partnership, Atlas Core Energy will invest in the deployment of CNG-powered buses and supporting infrastructure across the state, aimed at providing affordable, cleaner, and more efficient public transportation. The initiative is expected to reduce transport costs for commuters, cut carbon emissions, and ease pressure on petrol and diesel usage.

State officials described the project as part of a broader strategy to modernise the transport sector, improve urban mobility, and align with Nigeria’s energy transition goals. The CNG-powered transit system is also expected to create jobs and attract further private investment into the state’s transport and energy sectors.

The partnership will run for two decades, with both parties committing to sustained investment, operational efficiency, and maintenance to ensure the long-term success of the mass transit programme.
