The Federal Government has released ₦50 billion from the university needs assessment fund to address critical infrastructure and academic gaps in public universities, assuring stakeholders that additional funding will follow.
Education sector officials said the disbursement is part of ongoing efforts to revitalise Nigeria’s tertiary education system, improve learning conditions, and support research and innovation across federal universities. The government added that further releases are planned to fully meet agreed funding commitments to the sector.
Meanwhile, a former University of Ibadan don has called on the government to extend recently approved academic allowances to emeritus professors nationwide, arguing that retired senior academics who continue to contribute through teaching, mentorship and research deserve similar recognition and support.
The ex-UI professor noted that emeritus scholars remain vital to university development and should not be excluded from welfare policies aimed at strengthening academic excellence and institutional stability.
The latest funding release comes amid renewed dialogue between the government and university unions, with expectations that improved financing and staff welfare will help reduce industrial disputes and stabilise the academic calendar.
