The Airport Police Command has arrested a driver with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Adewale Abiodun, following a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old female pedestrian at Ikeja Bus Stop in Lagos.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday along the busy Ikeja axis when a LAMATA-operated vehicle allegedly struck the young woman as she attempted to cross the road. Eyewitnesses said the impact left the victim critically injured, and she was confirmed dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Police officers from the Airport Command promptly arrived at the scene and took the driver into custody for interrogation. The vehicle involved in the accident was also impounded as part of ongoing investigations.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at a nearby mortuary, while efforts are underway to contact her family. Authorities said statements are being taken from witnesses to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
The Airport Police Command assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that anyone found culpable would be made to face the full weight of the law. The incident has once again raised concerns over pedestrian safety and traffic management around major bus stops in Lagos.
