NIGERIAN HOSPITAL MAKES HISTORY WITH FIRST UROLIFT SURGERY IN AFRICA.

In a groundbreaking medical achievement, The Prostate Clinic (TPC) in Victoria Island, Lagos, has successfully performed Nigeria’sand Africa’s first-ever UroLift surgery, marking a major leap forward for the nation’s healthcare system.

The revolutionary procedure, led by renowned urologist Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, offers new hope to men suffering from Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as prostate enlargement. The minimally invasive surgery lifts and holds the enlarged prostate tissue to open the urinary passage, without cutting, heating, or removing any part of the gland.

Unlike traditional prostate surgeries, the UroLift technique preserves sexual and urinary functions, allows patients to go home the same day, and significantly reduces recovery time. According to Professor Ekwueme, the introduction of this procedure in Nigeria will help reduce the growing rate of medical tourism among Nigerians seeking advanced urological care abroad.

“This is a major milestone for Nigeria and Africa. We now have the capacity to treat prostate enlargement safely, effectively, and affordably, right here at home,” Ekwueme stated.

He explained that suitable candidates for the surgery are men whose prostate sizes are below 80 millilitres and who do not have other complications such as cancer.

The success of the operation underscores Nigeria’s growing capability in advanced medical procedures and represents a significant stride toward self-sufficiency in healthcare delivery.

With this feat, The Prostate Clinic joins a select group of hospitals worldwide offering the innovative UroLift procedure, reaffirming Lagos as an emerging hub for medical excellence in Africa.
